In 1994, THIEL issued its latest iteration of the CS1 line featuring trickle-down technology from its bigger brothers, the CS2.2 and CS3.6.

A passive radiator loaded reflex design brought far tighter, more tuneful, and deeper bass to the CS1 series than ever before (or since). The short coil / long gap bass driver with an aluminum cone derived from the CS7 lower midrange made smooth response and highly detailed sound throughout the mid band.

The specs would suggest that of a high performing bookshelf speaker, but as a floorstanding model, the performance potential was so much greater. With a well chosen integrated amplifier, these subtle speakers will fill a small to moderate room with music. The fresh black-ash finish and new grille cloth look subtle and refined.

This pair, numbered 4461 and 4462 were completed on October 21, 1996 and were most recently owned by a collector in Cincinnati.

When I obtained them earlier in 2026, the cabinets were structurally sound but had a number of scuffs, scratches, and soft edges, the woofers had typical deterioration of the spider spacers, but they were otherwise in good mechanical condition.

I replaced the original plastic-nut binding posts with solid brass gold plated posts—the same ones found on CS6 and CS7.2 models.

The cabinet was completely repaired and refinished with satin-black lacquer and looks stunning. Though the original grille fabric was in surprisingly good condition, I recovered the frames in new fabric so the enclosures look brand new.

I rebuilt both woofers and both tweeters taking care to use new ferrofluid in the tweeters and a newly manufactured plastic spider spacer for each woofer. The pair has been completely tested to meet original performance specifications.

The speakers come with a one year warranty against defects in materials and workmanship. They will ship well packed in original boxes with additional reinforcement and 6 push-in floor spikes.
